Two people have died and a third seriously injured after a car smashed into a cyclist and pedestrians this morning in Coventry.
West Midlands Police said two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle along Gosford Street, a high street filled with historic buildings in the city centre, at 8am.
The car careened into a cyclist along Woodway Lane just by the Potter’s Green suburb about three miles east of the inner ring road.
What is believed to be the same car crashed into a house on Beckbury Road, a quiet residential street.
A 44-year-old pedestrian, who was struck on Gosford Street, and a cyclist hit on Woodway Lane, were both rushed to hospital.
But despite the best efforts of critical care staff, both died of their injuries.
Another pedestrian has been treated for injuries which police say are not believed to be life-threatening.
A man fled the wreckage, the force said, with officers using drones and sniffer dogs to track him down.
‘At around 9am a man was arrested on Beckbury Road, Coventry,’ the police said, ‘and is currently helping police with their enquiries.’
Gosford Street, Woodway Lane and surrounding roads will be closed as police carry out investigations.
Police have appealed for witnesses.
