University calls off Harry Potter dinner in JK Rowling trans row

Hogwarts events at Homerton College’s wood-panelled Great Hall have included fancy dress, Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff house banners – and even owls.

Homerton Union of Students (HUS) says it abandoned this year’s dinner because the college has moved its kitchens near a new dining hall.

Instead, it will show Harry Potter films on an outdoor cinema screen.

But some students blame opposition to JK, right, who has spoken against trans people going into women-only spaces.

Last year, HUS president Robin Webber, an ex-student LGBT rep, said JK was “dangerous to me”.

He tweeted: “I understand wanting to stick with Harry Potter but you ARE supporting the artist who does real damage to the rights of trans people.”

The HUS said: “Our new modern dining hall doesn’t really lend itself to a Harry Potter theme and this year we wanted to try something new anyway.”
