Lisa Cooney was dining at Ravelston House in Musselburgh, Scotland with her family on May 30 when the incident happened. She claimed to have politely asked which options were suitable for vegans, only to be given a menu with an unexpected message left inside.
Edinburgh Live reports that when she opened the menu, Ms Cooney saw a number of circled items.
She then saw that a note had fallen out of it and was stunned by the message on it when she picked it up.
It said: “The vegan sh*** has been circled.”
Ms Cooney was very upset with the unexpected experience.
She added: “I dined today for lunch with family who are visiting for the weekend.
“I asked what options were vegan and the barman said he would ask the chef, he came back with the menu which had the items circled and he put the note on the bar, it fell from the bar and my dad picked it up and showed it to me.
“When I first read it I was in disbelief, then I was angry and upset, it’s insulting and so unprofessional, also the total disregard for any potential allergy is a worry.
“For a chef to have that mentality is quite shocking.
I went and spoke to the manager after my family had finished their meal, he apologised and agreed the note wasn’t acceptable.”
Ms Cooney explained that she also spoke to an assistant manager at the restaurant, who appeared to be “much more understanding” of what had happened.
Edinburgh Live has contacted Ravelston House for comment.
