Princess Beatrice, 33, and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have welcomed their first child together, a daughter. However, Prince Andrew, 61, missed the birth of his first granddaughter and second grandchild because he is currently 500 miles away from London in Scotland. His ex-wife Sarah Ferguson had been staying with her former husband, but she made the 500-mile trip back to London to see the royal baby over the weekend.

The Queen’s granddaughter gave birth to her daughter, who weighed 6lbs 2oz, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital just before midnight.

Speaking on Twitter, Princess Bea said her daughter was born safely but did not reveal if a name for the baby girl had been chosen.

Her daughter is the fourth royal baby to be welcomed this year, and is sure to have been greeted warmly by his grandmother Sarah, Duchess of York.

She returned from the Balmoral Estate in Scotland on Friday to meet her new grandchild over the weekend.

A friend of Sarah’s told the Daily Mail: “She’s perfect and Sarah is absolutely smitten.

“She’s always very proud of both girls but to have two grandchildren in a year is a total joy.”

The source added Beatrice’s daughter might even have inherited her mother and grandmother’s red-hair locks.

They said: “She’s got a hint of red… and a hint of gold.”

Prince Andrew is yet to return from Scotland to meet his new granddaughter, however.

And sources say they have no idea when Prince Andrew intends to return to Windsor to visit with his new granddaughter.

One insider told the Sun: “Andrew has made it quite clear that he wasn’t leaving Balmoral.

“It would appear the advice to him was to stay in hiding and miss the whole thing.”

The Duke of York travelled up to Scotland more than a week ago, days before the first hearing into the US sex assault claim was brought against him by accuser Virginia Roberts.

The Queen’s son has repeatedly denied the allegations and is now in crisis talks about his legal strategy.

Prince Andrew, who stepped away from royal work in November 2019 in the wake of a car crash interview with BBC’s Emily Maitlis regarding his connection to the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is said to be a doting grandfather.

Although her father has yet to meet or publicly mention the baby, Beatrice’s grandmother the Queen released a statement saying she was “delighted” with the news.

A statement from Buckingham Palace announcing the birth read: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 11.42pm, at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. The baby weighs 6 pounds and 2 ounces.

“The new baby’s grandparents and great-grandparents have all been informed and are delighted with the news. “The family would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their wonderful care.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well, and the couple are looking forward to introducing their daughter to her big brother Christopher Woolf.”
