A new ITV documentary series My Years With The Queen explores the life of Lady Pamela Hicks and her time with Queen Elizabeth II. The aristocrat will share rarely seen photographs and extracts from her personal diaries, as well talk about her long relationship with the monarch. But who is Lady Pamela Hicks?
To the British public, the Queen is a distant head of state, and rarely plays a part in our day-to-day lives.
But while her steely exterior is known best to us, others know her in a much more personal capacity – even if it is quite hard to imagine being friends with the Queen of England.
However, to Lady Pamela Hicks, 91, the Queen is a lifelong friend and confidante, and the pair have remained close for decades.
In the documentary, Lady Pamela will share her memories alongside her daughter, India Hicks, 53, ahead of the monarch’s 95th birthday on April 21.
Who is Lady Pamela Hicks?
Lady Pamela Hicks is the youngest daughter of Edwina Ashley and Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was Prince Philip’s uncle.
Her father was famously killed by a bomb planted by the IRA on his fishing boat off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland, in 1979.
His daughter narrowly avoided death or serious injury, having chosen not to go out on the boat just before it sailed.
He was also the Viceroy to India before independence came in 1948.
Lady Pamela Hicks was born in Barcelona and attended school in New York.
For a period she was the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, which basically means she acted much like a personal assistant to Her Majesty.
She was also a bridesmaid at then Princess Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.

She assisted the Queen prior to her ascension to the throne and continued following her coronation, going on a number of international royal tours with her.
Lady Pamela has been with the monarch at some key moments in her life, including when her father, King George VI died while she was on a trip to Nairobi in Kenya in 1952.
Speaking about the Queen, Lady Pamela says in the documentary: “She is an amazing person.
“There’s such inner strength there. And she has just remained like that throughout her life.”
She was married to interior designer David Nightingale Hicks for 38 years, married in 1960 until his death from lung cancer in 1998.
They had three children together, Edwina, Ashley and India.
India Hicks is the most famous of the trio, having hosted her own podcast and having a career in design.
She was also a bridesmaid at Princess Diana and Prince Charles 1981 wedding.
My Years with The Queen airs on Thursday, April 1, at 9pm on ITV.
