Will dentists be open during lockdown in England?

With a second national lockdown looming across England this week, many people are asking whether dentists will be able to stay open throughout November.

During the last full, nationwide lockdown across the UK, which began in March, dentists were forced to close, with appointments and treatments cancelled.

Dentists did not reopen again until June, with very long waits for treatment and after many patients had to postpone much-needed dental care.

England is now facing a new set of lockdown rules and restrictions, due to become law from Thursday November 5 until Wednesday, December 2.

But what does that mean for dentists this time around?

Will dentists be open during lockdown in England?

The British Dental Association (BDA) have said that while clarification is needed on the new rules and restrictions set to be imposed on the UK, they believe that dental practices will be able to remain open during the second lockdown in England.

Writing on their official website the BDA say: ‘we are seeking urgent clarification as to the position of dental services during the four week period of additional restrictions from 5 November.’

‘Based on the Government guidance so far published our interpretation is that dental practices will continue to operate as at present. ‘

The BDA’s stance on dentists staying open throughout November is based on the government guidance that one of the exceptions for leaving home during the second lockdown is: ‘for any medical concerns, reasons, appointments and emergencies’ – in which a dental appointment could be included, especially is carrying out essential work on teeth causing pain or infection.

The BDA concludes: ‘Dental teams have risen to the challenge during the pandemic and are delivering vital care while ensuring the safety of both staff and patients.’
