At the time, the Duke of Cambridge was working long hours as a helicopter pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA), while also carrying out some royal duties. The job entailed long hours and dealing with distressing situations, often involving children. William decided that he needed some time off in March and headed for the slopes in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier, to let off steam.

He was subsequently filmed dancing in a nightclub along to the 1990s hit song “I got 5 On It” by US hip-hop stars Luniz.

Photos of the dancing Prince made there way into the media and William was roundly criticised for showing a lack of commitment to his royal duties, by choosing to go on holiday rather than attend the Commonwealth service.

A friend told The Sunday Times that William was furious with what he perceived to be unfair criticism, that did not take into account the pressures of his full-time day job.

“That p****d him off,” the friend admitted.

“He was leaving home at 5.30am, getting home after dark and saving lives in between, but people were still being critical of his commitment to his [other] job.”

The Duke of Cambridge’s decision to work as a pilot for the air ambulance was apparently frowned upon by royal courtiers, the report goes on to claim.

They regarded the “bourgeois” profession as unbecoming for a future King of England, a source revealed.

The source told The Sunday Times: “There were lots of raised eyebrows in the Palace when he wanted to do that.

“While the Queen and his father backed him, some senior courtiers questioned whether it was becoming of a future king to be doing a middle-class role, hanging out with ordinary people.”
