Yellow weather warnings still in place while rain batters UK

Four weather warnings remain in place across the UK for today while wet weather continues through the start of January.

There are two yellow warnings for rain in north-west England and the east of Wales from 6am until 8pm.

There is also a yellow warning in west Wales lasting until 10am, and another in central Scotland until 7pm.

The Met Office warned ‘persistent heavy rain may lead to some disruption on Tuesday’, suggesting flooding is likely and journeys by road may be delayed.

Power supplies may also be cut off in some areas.

Some 29 flood warnings and 90 flood alerts are also in place across England today, with an additional 20 flood alerts in Wales.

York city centre flooded overnight after the River Ouse burst its banks.

Barriers were put in place along the River Severn in Worcestershire at the weekend after it also flooded, and fields were seen submerged in Wiltshire, Carmarthenshire and Herefordshire.

The forecaster said: ‘Outbreaks of rain will spread across England and Wales during Tuesday.

‘This will be heaviest and most persistent across parts of Wales, particularly over higher ground.

‘Rainfall totals of 80 to 100mm could accumulate over high ground.’

The Met Office added rain is set to clear eastwards tonight, which will leave clearer spells behind and some blustery showers.

There is likely to be more rain across the south of the country tomorrow.

And unfortunately the weather isn’t set to improve over the coming days, with more rain forecast through until Saturday with a risk of gales. It will however remain mild in the South.

A ‘pothole crisis’ is also currently gripping the UK, after a harsh winter has left roads blighted with cracks and holes.

Around 60% of drivers think the roads are worse than a year ago, the RAC says, and road surface quality is thought to be the main issue.

Experts believe ‘rapid freeze and thawing cycles’ have made the situation far worse than usual.
