People are still allowed to move to a new home, despite England entering a third national lockdown.
Government guidance released today states that people can still move home, but that people outside your household or support bubble should not help with the move unless ‘absolutely necessary.’
Estate and letting agents and removals firms can continue to work.
Property viewings are still permitted too, providing they can be done in a Covid-friendly way. However, initial viewings should be done virtually when possible.
If you do go to view a property, you must wash your hands, maintain social distancing and avoid touching all surfaces unless neccessary.
If you need to be accompanied by small children, you should try to keep them from touching surfaces and ensure they wash their hands regularly.
Government guidance states: ‘The housing market in England will remain open.
‘This means that people looking to move home will be able to both continue with planned moves and view new properties to move into in the future.
‘Estate and lettings agents, removers, valuers and people in sales and lettings offices and show homes will be able to continue working.’
However, should cases continue to soar, the government has warned the rules could change in regards to moving house.
‘It may become necessary to pause all home moves locally or nationally for a short period of time to manage the spread of coronavirus. We will let you know if this needs to happen,’ a statement on the gov.uk website reads.
Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick previously said in November businesses crucial to the housing market can also continue to operate while following health and safety rules.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Jenrick said: ‘Renters & homeowners will be able to move; Removal firms and estate agents can operate; Construction sites can and should continue; Tradespeople will be able to enter homes.
‘But all must follow the Covid safety guidance.’
During the first shutdown introduced in March, people were allowed to move home but were encouraged to postpone doing so if possible.
Businesses have been urged to find ways to make their operations more Covid-safe, such as offering virtual viewings or instructing homeowners to vacate their property during viewings.
Viewings taking place in person may not involve more than one household besides the estate agent and open house viewings remain banned.
