Britain records 16,171 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours

London: Britain has recorded 16,171 new cases of coronavirus within 24 hours, according to government data published on Saturday, compared with 15,650 the previous day.

The infection rate has risen sharply in recent weeks, prompting British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other regional leaders to introduce tighter restrictions and local lockdowns.

The data showed 150 new deaths from COVID-19, defined as having occurred within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test, compared to 136 on Friday.

36-year-old injured in Queens Village ambush shooting: police

A man was shot in Queens Village by a group who emerged from a vehicle and ambushed him as he was walking down the street, police said.

The gunmen jumped out of a vehicle on 104th Avenue, near 225th Street, around midnight Friday and began firing at the 36-year-old victim, striking him in the left calf, police said.

He was being treated at North Shore University Hospital.

    The Breast Cancer Research Foundation raised a record-breaking $3 million at its first-ever virtual awards luncheon.

    Guests were treated to a performance by “Hamilton” star Mandy Gonzalez — who’s currently battling breast cancer.

    Gwyneth Paltrow and Joan Lunden. Nobel Prize winner William G. Kaelin Jr. was honored, as were Maria and Larry Baum for their annual Hamptons Paddle for Pink event, which has raised $11 million for BCRF.
