Trump calls Biden's coronavirus plan unscientific, rejects call for national mask mandate

President Donald Trump on Thursday rejected former Vice President Joe Biden's call for a national mask mandate to combat the coronavirus, accusing the Democratic candidate for president of politcizing the outbreak and of shunning science in combating the pandemic.

"It's a shameful situation for anybody to try and score political points while we're working to save lives and defeat the pandemic," Trump said during a White House press briefing.

Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, earlier on Thursday said every American should wear a mask when they're outside the home for the next three months. He said every governor should mandate their use.

Trump, who resisted calls to wear masks for months, now endorses the idea, although he favors allowing governors decide on whether to require them at the state level.

"We have urged Americans to wear masks. We've been saying wear them when it's appropriate," Trump said. "Maybe they're great and maybe they're just good, maybe they're not so good. But frankly what do you have to lose? You have nothing to lose."

DOJ claims Yale discriminates against white, Asian applicants

The Justice Department on Thursday accused Yale University of illegally discriminating against Asian American and white students in admissions, a major escalation of the administration’s attacks on affirmative action.

If Yale does not change its admissions policy, “the Department will be prepared to file a lawsuit,” according to a letter from Eric Dreiband, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

Yale said the school was dismayed by the allegation and called the government’s conclusion hasty and meritless.

Garage fire in Douglas County quickly spreads to home

A garage fire in Douglas County spread to the adjacent residence Thursday afternoon, and firefighters doused the blaze before it spread to other homes and surrounding vegetation.

There were no reports of injuries, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

The fire broke out about 2 p.m. at 7661 Deer Trail Drive, Parker. The property is surrounded by tall trees and wild grasses.

A recent run of dry, hot weather has raised wildfire concerns. Firefighters were able to stop the fire before it made a run through surrounding properties.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
