Soaring strikeout rates, poor leaguewide batting average signal pitchers’ early-season dominance
Roughly a month into the regular season, it’s rarely a good idea to start jumping to conclusions. Yet many fantasy managers with teams off to slow starts are already out on the edge of the diving board contemplating a full-on cannonball into the still chilly waters.
One thing we do know (and likely should have expected): Pitchers are ahead of the hitters.
Strikeout rates are once again on a record pace, with 24.6% of all plate appearances ending with a K in the score book.
We’ve already seen nine-inning no-hitters from Joe Musgrove and Carlos Rodon, plus another seven-inning no-no from Madison Bumgarner. The leaguewide batting average at the beginning of the week was a lowly .232. That’s five percentage points lower than the worst full season in history – the .237 mark in 1968 that led to MLB lowering the height of the pitcher’s mound the following season.

Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blasts three home runs vs. Washington Nationals
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays did something Tuesday night even his Hall of Fame father never did: hit three home runs in a game.
Just 42 days after celebrating his 22nd birthday, Guerrero became the youngest player since at least 1901 to record three homers and seven RBI in the same game. And he hit two of them against one of the best pitchers in the majors, three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals.
Guerrero started things off in style with a grand slam in the third inning that turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 lead. Facing Scherzer in the fifth, Guerrero launched a solo shot to left. And then in the seventh, he launched a two-run blast to right to close out the scoring in a 9-5 victory.

Bidens to visit Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter while in Georgia
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will visit the 39th president, Jimmy Carter, and his wife, Rosalynn, while in Georgia this week, the White House said Tuesday.
The White House had previously announced that Biden would attend a drive-in rally in Atlanta on Thursday to mark his 100th day in office, which comes a day after his first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday evening. The Bidens will now add in a trip to Plains, Georgia, to visit the Carters.
The 96-year-old former president and the 93-year-old former first lady were unable to attend Biden’s inauguration because of the coronavirus pandemic. Both couples are now vaccinated, and the Carters have resumed worshipping in-person at their longtime church.
Biden was a young Delaware senator and Carter ally during the Georgian’s term in the White House, from 1977 to 1981. Carter is now the longest-lived American president in history.
