The veteran spent spring training with the Mets, giving up five earned runs in 7 ¹/₃ innings — all of those runs coming in his final outing, a 2 ²/₃-inning start.
Montgomery offers the Yankees both bullpen and rotation depth.
The 31-year-old had a 5.06 ERA in 5.1 innings last season, and was 2-7 with a 4.64 ERA in 13 starts in 2019.
