In a ferocious attack on Prime Minister Boris Johnson, SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford lambasted the Government for its handling of the EU settlement scheme. The scheme ends at midnight on Wednesday, with 400,000 cases still up in the air. He claimed that European citizens are “welcome here” in Scotland and that “we want you to stay, this is your home” in a volley of criticism at the government.
Mr Blackford said: “The issue is there is a backlog of hundreds of thousands of cases because of delays on decisions.
“Overnight, thousands of our friends and neighbours could become illegal immigrants.
“They are living in fears for their jobs, their families, and their livelihoods all because this Prime Minister wouldn’t keep his word.
“Scotland’s message to EU citizens is: you’re welcome here, we want you to stay, this is your home.
“But this UK Government is causing EU citizens untold stress!
“Will the government now do the right thing, scrap the deadline, and introduce automatically granted settled status!
But Mr Johnson hit back saying: “It is obvious from the statistics that I have already quoted is that outstanding success because we have had huge numbers of people applying.
“It is five years since the Brexit referendum…. anybody applying within the deadline will of course have their application looked at!”
