Brexiteers rejoiced that the UK would now be in “full control of our destiny” as the deadline to request a Brexit delay was ignored by Boris Johnson’s government in a symbolic move. The transition period will now officially end on December 31, meaning the UK is free from the shackles of the EU by the end of the year.

Law and policy commentator for the Financial Times David Green tweeted: “The deadline for an extension of the Brexit Transition Period has officially passed.

“Roll on an independent United Kingdom. Midnight. The option has now expired for the United Kingdom to extend the Brexit transition period.

“The transition period will now end, by automatic operation of law, on 31 December 2020.

“There are currently no alternative arrangements in place. Brace, brace.”

Brexiteers reacted to the news on Twitter, and celebrated the move to finally signal an “independent UK”.

One posted: “The deadline for an extension of the #Brexit Transition Period was 23:00 on 30th June 2020. That deadline has now expired.

“The Transition period will end on 31st December 2020 and we have the chance to become a truly democratic nation with full control of our own destiny.”

Another said: “The deadline for an extension of the Brexit Transition Period has officially passed. Roll on an independent United Kingdom.”

The UK officially left the bloc on January 31 this year.

Prime Minister Mr Johnson confirmed the UK would not extend the transition period, meaning a deal must be agreed to stop the nation unshackling without a deal.
