Covid travel: cheaper tests introduced for returning flyers

Lateral flow tests will replace expensive PCRs from October 24 for travellers returning to the UK. The tests can be booked from next Friday.

Ministers have been working with companies to make sure there are enough in place to cope with the increased demand. Travellers must take a photo of their test and submit it online to prove the result.

University College London researchers said lateral flow tests detect the people most likely to spread Covid and results should be trusted.

The rule changes apply to most travel for children and fully vaccinated adults.

But travellers returning from destinations on the red list will still have to spend 11 nights in a quarantine hotel, costing £2,285.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “We want to make going abroad easier and cheaper, whether you’re travelling for work or visiting friends and family.”
