Confidence in the French president has plummeted to 39 percent, a drop of two points, according to an Ifop-Fiducial poll for Match and Sud Radio. This comes as France enters into its third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The poll also found 61 percent of the French public do not approve of his political actions, which is a three-point increase in one month.

Those who fully approve of the French President fell below 10 percent, two points less than the last poll.

Just 30 percent of those questioned believe he is close to the concerns of the French.

The poll also found confidence in Prime Minister Jean Castex has also dropped.

Almost two-thirds of French people do not approve of his actions during the pandemic.

At around 64 percent, this figure has risen by four points.

This marked the worst score for Mr Castex since his induction into the Ifop poll last July.

As calls for France to follow Britain and leave the European Union increase, support for the far-right party Rassemblement National has increased.

The poll found 41 percent of the French public would support the far-right party, a significant increase of eight points compared to the January 2021 survey.

Earlier this month, Mr Macron also saw his popularity plummet following the French government’s handling of the pandemic.

Mr Macron far-right rival, Marine Le Pen, said she was confident she would win the presidential election.

Ms Le Pen said: “I think I will win the presidential election.

“A lot of French people will be reassured when they see the way I run the country.”

Ms Le Pen went on to say how she wants to “bring together the French” and create a “government of national unity”.

She continued: “I wish to make a government of national unity, it is my dearest wish.

“Because it is what will make it possible to present to the French the necessary unity around a political project.”

Today Mr Macron announced French schools will close for at least three weeks as part of new national restrictions amid growing Covid cases.

In a televised address to the country, Mr Macron warned the country would “lose control if we do not move now”.

He said the “numbers are charging away from us” and France is now faced “a race against the clock”.

France is facing a peak of more than 5,000 people in intensive care.

To date, more than 4.6 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus pandemic with the death toll reaching 95,495.

The Ifop poll – which ran from March 25 to 26 – was carried out on a sample of 1,011 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
