The former Brexit Party MEP was asked on talkRADIO to compare the working of the UK parliamentary system with that of the European Union. Reflecting on her time sitting in Brussels as a member of the European Parliament, Ms Widdecombe was scathing in her assessment of how the bloc was run. She told hosts Ash Gould and James Whale that there was “not democracy at all” on the governance of the EU.
Mr Whale asked: “When you became an MEP after having a long time in our own parliament Anne, where you surprised by the way it was run?”
The former Brexit Party MEP replied: “I could not believe it.
“I had not studied the detail and so it did come as rather a shock.
“First of all you can only talk, unless you are the leader of one of the big groups, you can only talk for one minute.”

“Then they turn your microphone off,” interrupted Ash Gould.
“Yeah, they do it if you exceed the minute, they turn your microphone off yeah,” replied the former MEP.
“There was no real democracy there at all.
“Elections are not the kind of free fair elections which we are used to in our own parliament.”

She continued: “If you elected a speaker, you vote for who you like you don’t get told who is going to be the next speaker.
“So no democracy, no serious debate and challenge.
“And of course what can MPs do in this country we can propose law.
“You can’t as an individual MEP propose law in the European Parliament, you would need to get an agreement with umpteen groups before you even stood any chance at all.”

It comes as the European Parliament voted to ratify the Trade and Co-Operation Agreement between the UK and EU following months of wrangling.
MEPs met in Brussels on Tuesday for a final vote with the historic decision in favour coming through shortly before 8am BST Wednesday.
The total tall was 660 votes in favour of the deal to five cast against, and 32 abstentions.
Lord Frost, who negotiated the deal on behalf of the UK, hailed the vote as an “important moment”, and pledged the UK would always work in a “positive spirit” with the EU but stressed Britain was now free to stand up for its own national interests.
