The new Prime Minister held her first Cabinet meeting this morning after appointing a fresh body on Tuesday. Ms truss cleared out any remaining supporters of Rishi Sunak from her top team but gave senior roles to five of her leadership rivals, Penny Mordaunt, Tom Tugendhat, Suella Braverman, Kemi Badenoch, and Nadhim Zahawi.

Pressure is on Ms Truss to deliver for struggling families amid the cost of living crisis but newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey said people will have to “wait for the detail”.

Ms Coffey said the new Cabinet “will continue to make sure that we do strain every sinew put everything that we can in order to get our economy growing again”.

In her first speech in her new position, Ms Truss insisted the UK can “ride out the storm” caused by Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

New cabinet meets for the first time

Liz Truss met with her new cabinet for the first time this morning ahead of Prime Minister’s Questions.

She gathered the team early to hit the ground running on some of the biggest issues the UK is facing.

Members of the Cabinet met inside No10 at 8.30am this morning, just 12 hours after they were announced.
