Rejoin the EU, which wants to drag the UK back into the bloc, urged its followers on Facebook to enter their nationality as European in the Census. In the post, the campaign group shared instructions on how to do this.

Rejoin the EU said: “The census is a survey that happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

“To complete the census go to and request a code via text.

“Enter the code and away you go. It takes 20 minutes.

“Under nationality you can choose as many options as you wish – whatever you choose also select Other and enter European.”

The group also shared an accompanying video which called on people to “reaffirm your European identity”.

However the post on March 10 was shared just 14 times.

One person commented: “Done – I am European.”

But another blasted: “Sad.”

Rejoin the EU describes itself as campaigning “for the UK to retake its rightful place in the EU”.

The Census is a survey that happens every 10 years and gives a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

The call for people to put their nationality as European on the Census comes after the Brexit transition period came to a close at the end of 2020.

But some Remainers have now turned their attention to forcing the UK back into the EU.

Earlier this month, Lord Adonis revealed his “Step by Step Towards Rejoin” plan after he was elected as chair of the European Movement, a group founded by Winston Churchill which describes itself as the UK’s largest pro-European network.

Writing in North East Bylines, the Labour peer said: “Nothing less than rejoining the European Union is either acceptable or practical as our ultimate goal.

“For Britain’s security, prosperity and influence as a nation we must be full participants in the world’s largest free trade bloc that lies on our doorstep.”

Lord Adonis demanded “ceaseless action and relentless activism”.

He also insisted Remainers “will gradually and visibly be vindicated”.

The Labour peer added: “We must not simply be spectators to this decline, we need to be emphasising the closest possible relationship with Europe as the solution.

“It cured us once before when we were the sick man of Europe and it remains the only antidote.”
