Director-General of the think tank Centre for Brexit Policy, John Longworth insisted the UK should no longer be paying for the protection of European nations. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Mr Longworth claimed for too long EU nations have relied on the US and UK to protect them. He argued that as Brexit Britain moves forward, Boris Johnson must push the nations to pay into NATO adequately and be more self-sufficient.
Mr Longworth said: “In relation to defence and security, of course, the UK is one of only two credible nations.
“These nations are Britain and France, who have credible armed forces.
“Actually, the European Union has relied upon the UK and US through NATO to defend them.
“Really, we should be asking those nations to pay more for their own defence.

“It is rather ridiculous that the UK should be providing and paying for the defence of Germany, for example, as we have done since the end of the Second World War.
“Really that security relationship will continue but we certainly shouldn’t be paying for the defence of countries like Germany.”
Mr Longworth also insisted that while the UK has cooperated with the EU, it has other nations and groups with which it shares security goals.
Mr Longworth highlighted the close relation the UK has had with the US regarding security and the Five Eyes Network.

He said: “Britain and the US have a long-term relationship in relation to security and defence.
The Five Eyes network, which includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand, US and the UK, have worked very closely together to prevent terrorism.
“They have also helped to prevent a third world war and make sure that the world operates in the rule of law.
“It has been much more successful in maintaining peace than the European Union ever was or can be.”
