Kids as young as 12 could start being vaccinated from September over fears of a winter surge, reports claim.

Government plans are reportedly in place to lower the vaccination age to ensure progress does not begin to slide later in the year.

According to The Sun, the leaked “core planning” scheme will see those 12 and above given a single dose when school's open for the new term in autumn.

Plans are also in place to give booster vaccines to over 50s to fend off the danger from Covid variants.

The enhanced programme would mean over half the population effectively receiving a third jab before winter to help alleviate the chance of a new surge.

A source told the paper: “Plans are in place to vaccinate children aged 12 upwards, and senior government officials have been briefed.

“Though controversial, it is deemed necessary to stop the UK regressing in its remarkable fight against Covid.”

It is claimed that the Government are also prepared to immunise children as young as five if the relaxing of Covid restrictions leads to a dramatic rise in coronavirus cases over the summer or if a variant undermines vaccination progress.

Although Covid poses a much lower risk to children they can still spread it to others potentially making them very sick.

The Department of Health said no decisions had been reached on vaccinating children.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that globally, cases are increasing at a rate not seen since the worst days of the pandemic.

WHO special envoy Dr David Nabarro told the the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh last week that the emergence of new variants will be a regular occurrence for some time yet.

He said: "The pandemic is nowhere near finished. Each week we have seen four and a half million cases being reported and know those are an enormous underestimate."

And," she added, "we are still seeing a really significant number of deaths – nearly three million.

"What I want to stress is that the pandemic is surging forward everywhere.”
