Online shopping giant Amazon is having major problems finding warehouse workers this year — and it could spell big trouble for Christmas deliveries.
At the moment, the global firm is seeking to hire 20,000 temporary workers in the UK for its peak season, which includes Christmas, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.
But it has been reported that Amazon has struggled for applications so far this year, leading to them offering unusually high signing-on bonuses of up to £3,000 in some parts of the country.
The company's head office in the United States, led by the richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos, said that it will be spending large sums of money on bringing worker shortages and supply chain issues to an end.
The supply chaos is affecting warehouses around the world, writes The Mirror.
After the firm claimed yesterday that it was doing “whatever it takes to minimise the impact” on consumers, Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy revealed that they are to “incur several billion dollars of additional costs” to get to the root of all of the problems.
He said: “It’ll be expensive for us in the short term, but it’s the right prioritisation for customers and partners.”
Amazon UK said in a statement that the starting pay for fulfilment centre workers would be £10 an hour, or £11 in some areas.
They added: “We’re also offering a sign-on bonus at a number of locations to attract new permanent and seasonal associates.”.
Clare Bottle, Chief Executive at the UK Warehousing Association, said higher staff wages would likely be passed on to shoppers.
Amazon UK — who have been accused of poor worker conditions at their warehouses in both the UK and the USA — have not experienced any delays in deliveries to customers recently, a person with knowledge of the situation told Reuters.
