Boris Johnson has said sorry for breaking his own lockdown rules in a “wholehearted apology” but claims he did not know he 'breached them'.

In the Prime Minister's first appearance at the House of Commons since he was hit with a lockdown fine, he said he paid it immediately.

Following his recent punishment for having a birthday party at No 10 in 2020, Mr Johnson says there are far more pressing issues for MPs to worry about including Russia's war on Ukraine.

He said: "I paid the fine immediately and I offered the British people a full apology, and I take this opportunity on the first available sitting day to repeat my wholehearted apology to the House."

Boris said: "Today I've received a fixed penalty notice from the Metropolitan Police relating to a Downing Street Event on 19 June 2020.

"Let me say immediately, I have paid the fine and want to offer a full apology."

Mr Johnson's excuse of ignorance to the rules has not washed with everyone with some slamming his response to the fine as disgraceful" given the government's warnings at the time.
