Burberry launches first collection of designer face masks costing an eye watering £90 each

BURBERRY has launched its first collection of designer face coverings — costing a steep £90 each.

The patterned mask is produced using excess fabric and is available in the brand’s signature beige check, as well as in pale blue.

Burberry says on its website the reusable design uses “anti-microbial technology” and comes with a matching pouch.

It adds: “We are proud to be donating 20 per cent of the selling price of each mask to the Burberry Foundation Covid-19 community fund.”

Despite pictures of Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton-branded masks appearing on social media, these have been counterfeit designs.

Fashion houses have been slow to sell face coverings fearing they might appear to be profiting from the crisis.

Masks have also provided an income stream for struggling fashion industries during the crisis, often at the small, homespun, craft-based end of the business.

Some high-end brands including Off-White and Marine Serre have also produced face coverings.

And this month the craft aggregate site Etsy announced face covering sales of $346m (£264m) in the past three months, representing 14% of all business.
