For decades, Russia and the US were the only two superpowers in the world… of chess.
But yesterday that changed when Ding Liren became the first Chinese man to win the World Chess Championship.
He beat Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi yesterday to take the title from Magnus Carlsen, who declined to defend the contest.
The two finished on seven points each after 14 first-stage games played in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Mr Ding then clinched victory in a tie break round.

China has dominated women’s tournaments since the 1990s. World champion Ju Wenjun will face compatriot Lei Tingjie in July to defend her title.
