Eco-zealots who slashed SUV tires in NYC attack luxury cars across US

British eco-zealots who have slashed tires of at least 40 gas-guzzling SUVs in NYC now attack cars in Chicago, San Francisco and Scranton as they ‘massively expand’ operation after wreaking havoc in UK

  • The Tire Extinguishers have slashed more than 5,000 tires since March
  • The UK-based movement has spread across the US in the last month
  • The group deflated tires on 40 SUV and luxury cars in NYC in late June
  • They recently hit cars in Chicago, San Francisco and Scranton, Penn.
  • Climate activists have promised to ‘expand massively’ in the coming weeks

Eco-zealots are slashing tires on SUVs across the globe in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Tire Extinguishers movement, which started in the United Kingdom, has spread to the United States and leaders promised to ‘expand massively’ in the coming weeks.

New York City was hard hit by the group last month, when the tires of approximately 40 SUVs were deflated on the Upper East Side.

Residents in Chicago, San Francisco, and Scranton, Penn., were also targeted by the climate activists.

The group is most prominent across the UK and Europe, where activists have allegedly slashed more than 5,000 tires since the movement launched in March.

The Tire Extinguishers claim SUVs and 4×4 vehicles are a ‘disaster for our health, our public safety and our climate.’

The group alleges that government officials and policies have ‘failed to protect us from this danger’ so they have chosen to take action into their own hands.

‘We want to make it impossible to own a huge polluting 4×4 in the world’s urban areas,’ the group’s web site states.

‘We do this by deflating the tres (sic) of these massive, unnecessary vehicles, causing inconvenience and expense for their owners.’

The group, which publishes its slashing efforts online, took credit for deflating 40 tires in Manhattan last month. Members also targeted 20 vehicles in Chicago, 20 in Scranton and at least 23 in San Francisco.

Tire Extinguishers claims the group is also active in Arizona and Colorado, but hasn’t published slashing data for either state.

A Tire Extinguishers spokesperson told Fox News the group is working on it’s expansion across America.

‘It can happen anywhere, anytime,’ the spokesperson warned. ‘If you’re reading this and you own an SUV, scrap it before we get to it.’

When the group targeted New Yorkers late last month, they left pamphlets on windshields of cars they vandalized

‘We did this because driving around urban areas in your massive vehicle has huge consequences for others,’ the brochure read, asking owners not to ‘take it personally’

‘We did this because driving around urban areas in your massive vehicle has huge consequences for others,’ the brochure read, asking owners not to ‘take it personally.’

‘The world is facing a climate emergency. We’re taking actions into our own hands because our governments and politicians will not.’

The activists noted that electric and hybrid vehicles would be targeted as well because they also leave behind a carbon footprint.

‘The Tire Extinguishers want to see bans on SUVs in urban areas, pollution levies to tax SUVs out of existence, and massive investment in free, comprehensive public transport,’ the group told Fox News in June.

‘But until politicians make this a reality, Tire Extinguishers action will continue.’

The group placed similar flyers on the vehicles targeted in San Francisco, SF Gate reported. The Bay Area was hit last week.

Tire Extinguishers spokesperson Marion Walker told the newspaper the attack was the ‘first action in the Bay Area’ but that more demonstrations were looming.

Walker also noted the autonomous nature of the group ‘prevents other members from knowing who is deflating tires and where.’

‘We encourage people to target rich urban areas, but SUVs are a menace everywhere. This is an emergency,’ Walker added.

‘Deflating tires repeatedly and encouraging others to do the same will turn the minor inconvenience of a flat tire into a giant obstacle for driving massive killer vehicles around our streets.’

The group’s web site provides tips for activists to quickly deflate tires. It also has a copy of the leaflet that can be printed and placed on windshields.
