I lost half my brain in drugs lab explosion- I'm paying the price for my stupidity & my son said I looked like a monster

A DAD who lost half his brain in a drug lab explosion has shared how he is "paying the price" for his mistake.

Rapper Niko Brenner, 37, was left looking like " a monster" after he had big parts of his skull removed following the blast.

The father of a six-year-old boy said: "It hurts a lot that I will never be able to climb a tree with my son.

"I made a huge mistake, drove my whole life up against the wall – and I'm paying the price for it."

Niko, also known as Dr. Knarf, fromCologne, Germany, had been cooking cannabis oil in butane gas when the bottles exploded from a spark produced by his fridge, blasting him through the window of his basement studio.

The incident that happened in February 2017, caused him severe head injuries with surgeons being forced to remove half of his skull after his brain started swelling.

Niko said: "Forty per cent of the surface of my skin is burned. I've had almost 50 surgeries so far.

"People think that the doctors took away half of my brain, but fortunately that's not the case."

Recalling the first time he saw himself after the incident he said: "It was an absolute shock. I looked like a monster.

"My son was one year old at the time. I was terrified that he would even recognise me."

He said the worst thing after the accident was "not walking, not being able to move properly anymore. It saddens me not to be able to play the guitar, piano and keyboards anymore."

The musician also suffered four strokes and was left paralysed on one side. He now relies on a wheelchair and a walking aid.

He said it is theoretically possible to reconstruct his skull bone with an implant, "but there is not enough scalp due to the burns to reinsert a skull bone replacement".

To make things worse, the rapper had to file for bankruptcy as he ended up owing over £200,000 for hospital costs.

And he is also threatened with a trial for trading in narcotics and negligently causing an explosive blast.

But these setbacks have not deterred the rapper, who has been archiving files for a historical research office since 2019.

He said: "Giving up is not an option, you have to keep going somehow. Before, I was very egocentric and selfish.

"One insight I am grateful for today is a great deal of humility."
