M1 closed as two lorries and car crash – cops urge ‘avoid the area’

The M1 is closed after a two lorry and car crash overnight as cops urged people to "avoid the area".

Leicestershire Police said: "M1 Junction 19 to Junction 18 Southbound Closed due to a Road Traffic Collision.

"Please avoid the area. Find an alternative route if possible."

Two lorries and a car collided just before 6am – and vehicles were being held while the scene is coned off in lane one.

Highways England confirmed the M1 closed southbound due to collision which impact two out of the four lanes – urging people to allow "extra time".

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 5.44am by East Midlands Ambulance Service to a report of road traffic collision involving two HGVs and a car.

“There were four people injured – walking wounded – who were taken to hospital in Coventry by ambulance.

“It is believed the injuries were not serious.”

Highways England said: “We were called at 5.37am to a report of a collision.

“The police, fire and ambulance service were all in attendance.

“There is lane one of four lanes closed. Traffic is struggling.”
