A rooftop siege saw a man fire human poo at police in a "disgusting" dirty protest.

The man was detained after flinging excrement at officers during the stand-off, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports.

Officers were called to reports of a man on top of a building in Greengate Walk, Stafford, Staffs, at around 1.15pm on Saturday afternoon, November 28.

A two-hour stand-off ensued when he refused to come down and at one point the man made a dirty protest by aiming faeces at officers.

A picture from the scene also appears to show poo had been smeared on the wall by hand.

The "reluctant" suspect – who had not been named – was brought safely to the ground using a 'rescue stretcher' on ropes about two hours after the incident began.

He has since been arrested on suspicion of a number of crimes and taken into custody for questioning.

Sergeant Phil Jones, chairman of Staffordshire Police Federation, was called to assist with the incident after his colleagues were targeted while paramedics also attended.

Tweeting about the incident, Sgt Jones said: "Deployed to assist colleagues with a male on a roof.

"Male decided to throw human faeces at my colleagues – disgusting, disgraceful and unacceptable. Male now in custody."

Details of the man's age, where he lives and the what offence he has been arrested on suspicion of have not been revealed.

Superintendent Karen Stevenson, head of Staffordshire Police's head of operations unit, said: "Deployment for our working at heights team this afternoon using their rope rescue operator training skills in the Stafford area.

"We got to try out the brand new sked rescue stretcher that only arrived yesterday to lower the reluctant male to the ground."
