Meghan Markle and Harry’s luxury lifestyle ‘fuelled by freebies’, authors claim

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's luxury lifestyle was fuelled by millions of pounds of freebies, authors of the new biography Finding Freedom have claimed.

Even before her marriage to the prince, the US star was a successful actress with ample funds of her own.

Her fortune combined with Harry’s immense wealth gives the couple enormous spending power.

But how much of their own money do the Duke and Duchess actually spend?

Throughout their book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand hints Meghan and Harry have coasted through their four years of marriage on the back of generous gifts from friends and businesses.

One estimate puts the value of these various freebies at over £3.5 million or almost a million pounds a year since they were married, according to Daily Mail.

Some of the bigger-ticket items include flights on private jets.

Discussing Meghan’s visit to the UK after news of her romance with Harry broke in 2016, the book says: “Jessica (Mulroney, Meghan’s closest friend) arranged for her to use the private jet of the Canadian real-estate power couple Krystal Koo and Michael Cooper.

“Long-time friends of Jessica’s, the couple had run interference in the past for Harry and Meghan and were more than happy to help.

“Fancying a trip to London themselves, Krystal and Michael joked about hiding Meghan in one of the new suitcases Meghan had bought.”

That flight from Toronto to London alone would have cost in the region of £50,000, according to the Mail.

Another flight, said to have been paid for by actor George Clooney and his lawyer wife Amal when Harry and Meghan visited their Italian villa, would have reportedly cost over £13,000.

There are numerous private jet trips through the book, along with stays at exclusive locations which were reportedly offered to the Duke and Duchess for free or at heavy discounts.

While the book also claims during the couple’s courtship they were "put up" at a private four-bedroom cottage in the Cotswolds Soho Farmhouse and at the Soho House property at Babington in Somerset – which costs around £1,800 a night.

In the book, Mr Scobie and Ms Durand describe the couple’s secret honeymoon in 2018.

It reads: “They had flown on a private jet loaned by a friend.

"They spent the majority of the week-long trip in the sun at a location so private, most of their friends still don’t know where it was.”

The couple's flight on Sir Elton John’s private plane from Ibiza to Nice, which cost around £6,000, coincided with the launch of Prince Harry’s ecological travel initiative Travalyst.

They also got a private jet back from the seventh annual Google Camp for Prince Harry to discuss climate change with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Barack Obama, Katy Perry and Harry Styles.

“The tech giant footed the bill for everything, including travel to the resort and back,” claim Mr Scobie and Ms Durand in the book.

“Harry’s original plans were to fly commercial, there and back on the same day, but while at the event he accepted a lift back to London on an attendee’s private jet so he could stay a day longer and discuss his work on a sustainable tourism initiative."
