Meghan Markle has admitted that she wore "ripped jeans" and had "bare feet" in her first meeting with Kate Middleton before she went for a hug that Catherine, Princess of Wales found "jarring".
The Duchess of Sussex was having dinner with Kate and her husband William, Prince of Wales but didn't realise that the royal formality shown in public was supposed to carry on in private too.
Speaking in the second episode of the bombshell Netflix documentary, made alongside her husband Harry, Duke of Sussex, Meghan explained: "It's so funny if I look back at it now because now I know so much and I'm so glad I didn't then, because I could authentically be myself without so much preparedness.

"Even when Will and Kate came over and I had met her for the first time, I was in ripped jeans and bare feet. I was a hugger, I have always been a hugger, and I didn't realise this is very jarring for a lot of Brits."
She added: "I guess I started to understand really quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside… that formality continues on both sides and that surprised me."
Meghan's comments on her first meeting with Kate comes years after the pair first met, before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit their roles as working royals.
Megxit, when the pair stepped down from royal duties, made headlines around the world in 2020 and sent shockwaves through the palace.

Harry and Meghan, parents to Archie and Lilibet, have taken part in a number of high profile interviews since then, including a bombshell sit-down with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey in 2021.
They have accused the Royal Family of racism on numerous occasions, claiming an unnamed royal made a racist remark about Archie's skin before he was born, and that the institution failed to help a suicidal Meghan.
The palace maintained, in a carefully worded statement, that "recollections may vary" with regards to those specific incidents.
There has also always been a sense of rivalry between Meghan and Prince William's wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Meghan said that "just by existing" she and Harry were "upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy" before they stepped down as working royals.
