Mike Bloomberg to spend $100 million in Florida to help Joe Biden

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg pledged to spend as much as $100 million to boost Joe Biden in the crucial swing state of Florida, where polls show President Trump and the Democratic presidential nominee in a neck-and-neck race less than two months from Election Day.

The former New York City mayor and short-lived presidential candidate made the decision to inject the millions into the Sunshine State after Trump last week said he was willing to donate money to his campaign from his personal fortune, the Washington Post reported.

“Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need,” Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey told the newspaper. “Mike believes that by investing in Florida it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.”

A victory in the battleground state of Florida by the former vice president would seriously complicate the president’s ability to amass the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win in November.

Bloomberg dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary in March after spending more than $1 billion on his campaign and quickly endorsed Biden for president.

He also reached into his deep pockets to donate to Democratic candidates during the 2018 elections, vowing to spend as much as $100 million.

Democrats won control of the House during the midterms.

According to RealClear Politics, Biden holds a slight 1.2 percentage point advantage in Florida polls.

An NBC/Marist poll shows the two candidates deadlocked. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in Florida in 2016 by 48.6 percent to 47.4 percent.
