Mourners gather for funeral of Zane Mellor, killed in Devonport tragedy

Mourners are gathering in the Tasmanian township of Devonport for the funeral of the first of six children killed in a freak accident.

Zane Mellor, 12, was enjoying a day of fun on the last day of term at Hillcrest Primary School when a gust of wind lifted a jumping castle and “zorb balls” 10 metres into the air.

It then plunged to the ground, scattering year 5 and 6 students. A police and WorkSafe investigation is underway.

Zane’s mother, Georgie Gardam took to social media this morning, saying “today will be one of the hardest days of my life”.

“What do I weigh up … the day I lost you, or the day I put you to rest, I’m not sure,” she wrote.

“Mummy loves you Zane, I know you are with me already, I don’t know where I have pulled this strength from, but I say it must be from you.”

The funeral venue is expected to be packed as the community wraps its arms around the grieving family.
