Police are scrambling to the scene of a mass shooting inside a FedEx warehouse near Indianapolis International Airport.

Cops say that multiple people have been wounded and there are reports that four people have died, although fatalities have not yet been confirmed by the authorities.

Police have confirmed that there are 'multiple victims at the scene' following the shooting on Thursday night, (April 15) 11pm local time (4am GMT).

911 calls claim people were shooting outside and inside the building, with workers hiding inside by the conveyor belt.

They have been called to the south west side in the 8900 block of Mirabel Road, and the I-70 has been shut in both directions.

Authorities were reportedly heard declaring the incident as a 'mass casualty, level 1', which means there could be less than 10 surviving victims, as emergency responders raced to the scene.

The building has been evacuated following the shooting, local reports say.

Early reports also claimed that at least two people are fighting for their lives.

Witnesses at the scene say they saw one armed shooter enter the building, and one person claims that another man 'tried to be a hero'.

Another witness told reporters they are "lucky" and they believed they were going to get "shot".
