‘My child is banned from the school playground and canteen because of her hair’

A battle between an angry mum and her daughter's school has gone viral after a girl was banned from areas of the school building because of her hairstyle.

Officials at Bishop Challenor Catholic College in Kings Heath, Birmingham, have come under fire for punishing the unnamed girl because she has a braided hairstyle with a heart-shaped pattern on the side.

The pupil barred from the playground and canteen for the style with the school claiming she had broken school rules, the Birmingham Mail reports.

But mum Jade Samuels took to social media to slam the decision.

She wrote on Twitter: “My child is banned from the school playground/canteen for her hair, its neatly-braided in a natural colour.

"I gave them a lesson on the history of black women's hair's cultural significance of braiding, they chose violence.

“Just for clarity, the issue the school has is with the heart, as if that makes it any less bad.”

The school told the Daily Star in a statement: “Bishop Challoner Catholic College is very clear that braids are allowed to be worn in school. If parents/carers have any issues, there are clear procedures in place which they can follow for their concerns to be addressed.

“Our school uniform code permits braided hair, but states that 'students should not have shaved/razored hair styles or lines/patterns shaved into the hair and that the final decision as to whether a particular haircut/style is appropriate is at the discretion of senior staff.

“The decision has been made that if shaved patterns are not permitted for students, then a braided pattern cannot be permitted on that basis.

“Bishop Challoner Catholic College follows standard procedure with students sitting apart in the canteen during break and lunch times until the uniform code is applied

“They are permitted to sit with their friends at staff discretion.”
