Nicola Bulley search could lead police 20 miles from where she went missing

The search for missing mum Nicola Bulley could be moved as far as 20 miles away to Morecambe Bay.

Nicola, 45, was walking her dog when she went missing on Friday, January 27, near the River Wyre in Lancashire.

She had dropped her children off at school that morning before taking the family pup, Willow, on a walk.

The mum, whose phone was found at the scene of her disappearance and logged into a work conference on Teams, is believed to have approached the river.

Expert diving teams were called in by Lancashire Police on Sunday (February 5), run by forensics expert Peter Faulding and his Specialist Group International, to search the riverbed – but his team has now declared that they cannot find her in the river.

However, the river's trajectory could mean that her body – if she did fall into the river – could end up as far away as Morecambe Bay.

The River Wyre flows out into Morecambe Bay, which is around 20 miles away.

According to the Morecambe Bay By Nature organisation the river is at the southern end of Morecambe Bay.

When following Google Maps, it flows out into the part of the bay nearest to the Irish Sea, between Morecambe and Fleetwood.

Experts at the Wyre River Trust said: “The mouth of the Wyre sits between Fleetwood and Knott-End on Sea, at this point the river flows into Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea.

“The river ceases to be tidal at St Michaels.

“The deposition of silt and sand in the estuarine area has lead to the creation of Salt Marsh and Mud Flats.”

The possibility of having to increase the search was first mentioned on many sleuthing Facebook groups created around the investigation.

Peter Faulding was unable to find Nicola in the main stretch of the river where it is thought she fell. He announced earlier this week that he was no longer involved in the search.

He said: “It’s a total mystery for me, I really don’t know.

“In all the searches I’ve done, this is one which will stick with me. I’m glad really that we haven’t found Nicola because I didn’t want to recover another dead body.

“It just opens it up, is she alive, is she dead?

“Did she go in the river or didn’t she? And I can’t say one way or another.

“I’m baffled by it and I think most people are.”

The Daily Star has contacted Lancashire Police for a comment and the investigation continues.
