The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released video footage of what led to deputies shooting and killing a man who was armed with an AK-47 rifle and who fired shots at the deputies.
The incident happened at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday at the Interstate 25 interchange at Happy Canyon after a man called 911 to report an armed man in the area, according to Sheriff Tony Spurlock.
A deputy arrived on scene and with gun drawn ordered the armed man, who has been identified as 23-year-old Samuel Yeager, to drop the weapon and get on the ground.
When the deputy first arrived the rifle was in a soft carrying bag. Yeager does not immediately comply, according to the video footage, but he eventually gets on the ground with the bagged weapon.
That’s when Yeager pulls the rifle from the bag and fires, Spurlock said.
“Deputies returned fire and, unfortunately, killed the suspect at the scene,” Spurlock said.
The entire video was not released Monday pending an ongoing investigation, which includes the district attorney’s office, Spurlock said. The entire video will be released when the investigation concludes.
