Son, 21, is charged with murdering his ‘gentle, loving’ father, 54, and attempting to kill 50-year-old woman who is now fighting for life

  • Garvey Gayle, 21, is accused of killing ‘adoring grandfather’ Michael Gayle, 54 
  • Also accused of attempting to murder a woman, 50, who is in ‘serious condition’
  • Police rushed to their family home in St Mellons, Cardiff, on Friday evening  
  • Father-of-4 Mr Gayle was tragically pronounced dead at scene despite efforts

A son has been charged with murdering his ‘gentle, loving’ father after the 54-year-old was attacked at their family home. 

Garvey Gayle, 21, is accused of killing ‘adoring grandfather’ Michael Gayle, 54, and attempting to murder a 50-year-old woman.

Police rushed to their family home in St Mellons, Cardiff, on Friday evening following reports of a serious assault.

Emergency services and members of the public desperately tried to save Mr Gayle – but the father-of-four was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

A 50-year-old woman – who has not been named – was also attacked and was rushed to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. She remains in a ‘serious’ condition.

Mr Gayle’s son Garvey was arrested close to the scene and is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates Court today.

In a tribute, Mr Gayle’s family described him as ‘a gentle, loving man who doted on his lifelong partner, Amanda, and their four children.’

They added: ‘He was an adoring grandad with the kindest heart, whose smile always lit up the room.

‘Michael enjoyed a private life with his family close at all times.

‘Michael’s way of life did not associate with death – he believed life is eternal.

‘Although we will soon be laying him to rest, it was important to him that we know he is forever present and his soul lives on. We take peace from that.

‘He spent his life loving, guiding and protecting us.

‘We thank everyone for their heartfelt messages at this difficult time and we appreciate your support.’ 

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder, following a serious assault in St Mellons on Friday night.

‘Garvey Gayle is accused of murdering 54-year-old Michael Gayle, and the attempted murder of a 50-year-old woman, who remains in hospital with serious injuries. He will appear before Cardiff Magistrates Court.’
