Son furious as 'Eon tries to charge parents £16,850 a year for power to small two-bedroom house'

A SON has claimed his parents have been charged more than £16,800 for one year's worth of gas and electric.

The unnamed man said his mum and dad live in a "small two-bed home".

The apparently extortionate bill, which also appears to show a whopping £821.78 charge for ONE DAY of gas use, was posted on Reddit.

The poster wrote: "My parents' energy bill, Eon are maintaining this is correct."

In a follow-up post they added: "This bill is for a small 2 bed terraced house. They 100 per cent think this gas usage is legit."

A picture of the bill, dated October 6 shows a whopping total of £16,830.58 for the full charges.

It says: "We have charged you based on your meter readings. Gas, 26th March 2021 – 26th March 2021 – £821.78.

"Electricity, 24th June -5th Oct.2021 -£166.24.

"Gas, 27th March 2021 – 5th October 2021 – £15400.55.

"On 6th Oct. 2021 your new balance was -£16830.58."

The poster explained that he is desperately trying to get the bill sorted for his mum and dad, but "it's a bit difficult to check things" because he lives abroad.

The poster added he and his parents feared some vulnerable elderly people might panic when they see the bill, and pay it.

He wrote: " My dad and I were talking about how some elderly people living alone might pay something like this without challenging it, or worse

"My dad told me they've actually been fighting this since July, so it's taking a very long time to sort."

And he insisted his parents had been in-putting their metre readings correctly.

One user asked: "Does ‘based on your meter readings’ mean they supplied their own reading?

"Because that’s easy to do wrong on a modern meter, there are lots of displays to cycle through."

The poster replied: "I think they had to because of Covid, but at this moment I'm unsure if they submitted pictures or read it aloud on the phone.

"My dad has sent me some pictures now and it actually doesn't seem to be one of the modern smart meters."

Other Reddit users were horrified with the amount.

One wrote: "What domestic household uses 15k worth of gas in 3 months! How in the hell can they maintain that this is correct?"

Another added: "Are they powering a hot air balloon without telling you?"
