Sydney man dies in India after contracting COVID-19

A Sydney father-of-two has died in hospital in India after contracting COVID-19, his employer says.

Govind Kant, 47, worked as assistant director for energy company Trina Solar Australia and had returned to India in recent weeks for personal reasons, Trina Solar Asia Pacific said in a statement.

“We have lost a dear friend and valued colleague. Trina Solar Australia assistant director, Govind Kant, has passed away after contracting the coronavirus in India,” it reads.

“Govind, who was based in Sydney for Trina Solar, had returned to India for personal reasons. Unfortunately, Govind contracted the virus in India and has passed away. He was 47 years of age.

“Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow that the team at Trina Solar feels for the passing of our exceptional colleague and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Govind and his family, including his wife and two daughters.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr Kant had worked with Trina Solar since August 2014 in Sydney.

Wholesale solar distributor Solar Juice said on Facebook: “We pay tribute to Govind Kant. A solar pioneer of our industry and a true gentleman.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
