This is the terrifying moment a Russian fighter jet comes within metres of a US spy plane.
The P-8 surveillance plane was flying in international airspace over the Mediterranean Sea when it was intercepted by the jet.
Shocking footage released by the US Navy shows the jet flying within 25 feet of the plane’s cockpit.
The US Navy said it was the second ‘unsafe’ intercept of one of its planes in just four days.
‘The Russian aircraft got within 25 feet of the P-8, putting both crews in harm’s way,’ The US Navy tweeted.
‘We expect nothing less than professional & safe interactions!’
In a statement, the US Navy said its plane was intercepted by a Russian SU-35 on Sunday over a period of 100 minutes.
A spokesperson wrote: ‘The first intercept was deemed safe and professional. The second intercept was determined to be unsafe and unprofessional due to the SU-35 conducting a high-speed, high-powered manoeuvre that decreased aircraft separation to within 25 feet, directly in front of the P-8A, exposing the US aircraft to wake turbulence and jet exhaust.
‘In response, the P-8A, which was operating at a constant altitude and airspeed, descended to create separation and ensure safety of both aircraft.
The unnecessary actions of the Russian SU-35 pilot were inconsistent with good airmanship and international flight rules, seriously jeopardizing the safety of flight of both aircraft.
‘While the Russian aircraft was operating in international airspace, this interaction was irresponsible. We expect them to behave within international standards set to ensure safety and to prevent incidents.’
The US Navy said the first ‘unsafe’ incident happened on Wednesday, April 15, over the same waters.
