Distressing footage shows a thug stab a kitchen knife into a homeless woman's head before running away.
The 59-year-old victim was left critically injured and rushed to hospital after being spotted by a member of the public who called the police after the vicious attack in Los Angeles on Tuesday (18 May).
In the chilling CCTV, a man creeps up on the sleeping woman, who is lying down in what appears to be a sleeping bag, and suddenly lunges downwards with a knife in his hand.
The homeless woman starts to thrash around and the culprit flees the scene on foot.
Los Angeles police department (LAPD) is now looking for the man who stabbed the homeless woman, leaving the knife blade embedded in her skull.
The violent attack occurred in Historic South Central Los Angeles on 25th and San Pedro, police said.
It is hoped the release of the CCTV will result in somebody coming forward with information that will lead them to the arrest of the man.
Residents of the neighbourhood said that the woman was known by locals and kept to herself and often fed two stray dogs.
