A furious Prince William once stuck pictures of Diana's love rival on his dartboard at Eton College, an author has claimed.

The teenage Duke of Cambridge made the revelation during a conversation between him, Piers Morgan and his mother back in the mid-1990s, according to author Tina Brown writing in an excerpt of her book The Palace Papers published in Vanity Fair.

His dartboard confession followed a highly public spat between Diana and journalist Julia Carling after the former supposedly began an affair with the latter's husband, rugby legend Will Carling.

Diana first met the sports star at a posh gym in Chelsea in 1995, with her introducing him to William during meetings in the weeks and months that followed.

According to Tina, William quickly bonded with him and they met again when he visited Kensington Palace, where he gifted him and Prince Harry a pair of England rugby shirts.

Contact with the family then fizzled out after the fling was made public — but this didn't stop Julia saying her piece soon afterwards.

In a not-so-subtle reference to Diana's scandal-ridden love life since the breakdown of her and Prince Charles' relationship in the early 1990s, Ms Carling said to reporters: "This has happened to [Diana] before.

"You hope she won’t do these things again, but obviously she does."

But a lunch soon afterwards with Piers saw Diana hit back at the comments, Tina writes.

Diana is said to have remarked: "She's milking it for all she’s worth, that woman.

“Honestly, I haven’t seen Will since June ’95.”

Young William clearly didn't want to let the conversation move on without having his own dig at his mum's public enemy, reportedly chipping in by saying: “I keep a photo of Julia Carling on my dartboard at Eton.”

Diana's string of high-profile romances in the 1990s appear to have affected his life at Eton in other ways, too.

A source speaking to the Daily Star in 2019 claimed that his classmates used to taunt him with the nickname 'Hewitt', in reference to debunked rumours that his real father was Diana's former flame James Hewitt.
